As is true with any successful weight loss, exercise is a key factor in your loss after weight loss surgery (WLS) and in maintaining your loss after you've reached your final goal weight. In order to keep the weight off, you will have to eat properly and exercise for the rest of your life. Many super morbidly obese people go into WLS unable to exercise at all. For some, even the ability to walk is even limited. Then, after the weight loss begins, many people regain their ability to walk and/or exercise. It may be a slow progression, but it does happen! Each person must find an exercise program that works for them. This may mean starting with walking short distances and working up to walking miles at a time. This may mean starting with walking and working up to jogging. It may involve very small free weights or weight-lifting on a much larger scale in a gym. It is important that you discuss your exercise program with your surgeon or your primary care physician so that they can help you determine your limits in the early stages and when you can safely increase your level of activity. It is not uncommon to be told not to exercise (other than walking) for the first month after your surgery. This is primarily due to the risk of developing a hernia. Check into local gyms, YMCAs, and community centers to see what exercise opportunities exist in your area. Curves (a women's exercise place) is a choice for women but can be somewhat restricting by the time you are about 6 months post-op and are able to do a bit more unless you started out very limited in your ability to exercise. Some women find Curves to be a boring workout once it no longer appropriately challenges their physical ability. You may want to consider not opting for the year long membership as you may not want to use Curves more than the first few months for these reasons. Consider looking at thrift shops, on eBay, at local garage sales and such to find used exercise equipment that you can use in the privacy of your own home if you are uncomfortable exercising at a gym. You can also consider using exercise/workout videos. These can often be found quite cheaply on eBay or via internet retailers like Amazon.com. Below are some good exercise links for you to check out!
